Guangzhou, located in the Pearl River Delta, is the capital of the district Guangdong at the southeast of China. The city is also known by the older English-language name, Canton. The city is a port on the Pearl River.
The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive to the city by sea, establishing a monopoly on the external trade out of its harbor by 1511.
Later they were expelled from their settlements in Guangzhou but instead granted use of Macau as a trade base.
Guangzhou is the economic centre of the Pearl River Delta and is the heart of one of mainlands China’s leading commercial and manufacturing regions.
There are abundant tourist attractions like parks, museums ande modern and historical buildings.
The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, also known as the Flower Pagoda, was originally an ancient Buddhist temple built in 537 in the Liang Dynasty.
The temple was burned down and rebuilt in the Northern Song Dynasty. The main structure of the temple was built in 1097, and was named for its colorful exterior
